Will Rogers Home Tour

Thursday, June 10, 2010 (1 day)

Over 80 years ago, Will Rogers, often called the “Cowboy Philosopher,” bought this magnificent spread of land in the Santa Monica Mountains, where he and his family enlarged their weekend cottage to 31 rooms. It is a woodsy, 186-acre retreat with corrals, horses, polo fields, rugged canyons and hillsides. At the Visitor’s Center, tour a small museum and see a short film about his life with exhibits about the cowboy-comic. Tour the home with a docent and explore the grounds on your own. Then it’s on to the historic Santa Monica Pier which celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2009, for an optional lunch with choice of entrée and dessert at Bubba Gump, or lunch on your own at one of the eateries on the Pier. Time to stroll on the pier enjoying the lively street performers and maybe take a ride on the 1922 Carousel. This afternoon, time at your leisure to stroll and shop along Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade. Suggested: walking shoes as there is considerable walking on this tour.

Whales, Lions & Coastal Terraces

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 (1 day)

Embark on a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour to discover the geographic and geologic secrets in our own backyard as we are joined for the day by an expert geologist-guide. You’ll be amazed at the new and surprising things you’ll learn about places you may have already been or things you’ve never understood. Our day begins as we travel through Santa Ana Canyon where the Santa Ana River passes between the Santa Ana Mountains and the Chino Hills. We’ll learn why this area poses the greatest flood hazard west of the Misssissippi River and see what’s being done about it. We’ll continue our journey to the largest natural lake in Southern California, Lake Elsinore, and learn about the drastic rise and fall of the lakes water level and what is being down to prevent another deadly flood like the one here in 1980. We’ll learn about the Elsinore fault and why that poses a greater threat here than the San Andreas fault. We’ll make a stop at Tom’s Farm near Lake Elsinore, offering farm-fresh produce, nuts and other goodies. Continuing along Ortega Highway we’ll begin an exploration of the largest intact natural landscape remaining in coastal southern California – the Santa Ana Mountains. At Caspers Wilderness Park, an 8,000 acre protected preserve nestled among the river terraces and sandstone canyons of the western coastal Santa Ana Range we’ll learn about the extensive human history here and the mountain lions that still rule here. Continuing west, we’ll travel to Dana Point and encounter a "stranger than fiction" story of the coastal rocks here. Finally, at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point Harbor, we’ll be joined by a marine scientist to discuss whales – differing species, their lifestyle and why they migrate more than any other mammal in the animal kingdom. The interactive lecture will be followed by a docent-led tour of the Ocean Institute. An included picnic lunch along our journey. A truly unique, fun and educational experience!
