| Join Dennis Napier, former professor of geography at Long Beach City College for a tour of the Mojave Desert and a docent-guided tour of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex. Located 35 miles north of Barstow on Fort Irwin, the 53-square-mile complex features large antennas that allow J.P.L. and NASA to “listen” to outer space. Our tour begins at the Goldstone Museum where three large areas are dedicated to current missions, past missions and Deep Space Network history. We are then joined by a J.P.L. docent as we travel out into the desert to see the huge antennas. As we travel through the Mojave Desert, Dennis will provide an in-depth explanation of the “living” desert including geologic and geographic phenomena, climatology and wildlife – you’ll never look at the desert the same way. An included lunch at Goldstone’s cafeteria. Required: government-issued photo identification; non-U.S. citizens must have proper documentation. |
