| A new and unique opportunity to take a docent-led behind-the-scenes tour of Edwards Air Force base and NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center. Located in the western Mohave Desert, the two are strategically situated next to Rogers Dry Lake, a desert salt pan which provides a natural extension to Edwards' runways. This large and remote landing area, combined with excellent year-round weather, makes the base a perfect site for flight testing and it has subsequently been home to many of aviation's most important and daring flights: Chuck Yeager first breaking the the sound barrier in the Bell X-1, test flights of the X-15, and Space Shuttle landings. The newest, the fastest and the highest aircraft – whether for the military, NASA or commercial purposes have and continue to make their debut in the vast, clear desert skies overhead. First, a 90-minute docent-guided walking tour of Dryden to see historical aircraft and displays, as well as current research aircraft. Then an extensive guided driving tour of the Edwards Base where we will go out on the flight line to see some of the 22 runways here and the Lakebed and Shuttle areas from a distance. You will depart in awe of the historical significance this place holds and of the research and testing that is still taking place here including the Crew Exploration Vehicle that will replace the Space Shuttle. Time for lunch on your own at the NASA cafeteria, as well as a visit to the NASA gift shop and the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum. As we travel through the Mohave Desert, your geologist-guide will provide an in-depth explanation of the “living” desert including geologic and geographic phenomena, climatology and wildlife – you’ll never look at the desert the same way. A continental breakfast will be served aboard the motorcoach. Required: closed-toe walking shoes, government-issued photo identification (non-U.S. citizens must have proper documentation).
